Five ways to keep your gums healthy.

Did you know that inadequate gum care can lead to Periodontitis, leading to tooth loss? Having healthy gums will improve your overall health. Many people think this only affects their mouth; the reality is that this gum disease can cause diabetes, dementia, heart disease and more. Continue reading to learn five ways to keep both you and your gums healthy.

  1. Brush and floss correctly. If you want to keep your gums healthy, brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss before going to bed.
  2. Choose a good toothpaste. Make sure you choose fluoride toothpaste if you would like to improve your gum health. You should also ensure the toothpaste is ADA-approved.
  3. Have a healthy diet. Including foods like vegetables, fruits, nuts, fish, black and green teas, milk, cheese and yogurts can provide essential nutrients your body needs and decrease the risk of periodontal disease.
  4. Avoid smoking. People who smoke have a significantly higher risk of having Periodontitis.
  5. Have regular dental check-ups and cleanings. When you visit your dentist regularly, you can prevent severe oral health conditions by identifying early signs and treating them on time. Dental cleanings are the way to remove tartar from the teeth and eliminate any plaque that you may miss when brushing your teeth.

Some factors that can cause gum disease:

  1. Smoking
  2. Pregnancy
  3. Stress
  4. Bad nutrition and obesity
  5. Age, as you age, the higher the risk of developing gum disease.
  6. Taking antidepressants, heart medications, or contraceptives.

*If you are exposed to any of the listed factors, it is recommended that you schedule an oral exam to keep your gums as healthy as possible & prevent them.
