For this reason and more, patients need to be screened at every dental exam.<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<div role=\"separator\">\n<h5 class=\"n p\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<section class=\"dc dd de df dg\">\n<div class=\"n p\">\n<div class=\"ab ac ae af ag dh ai aj\">\n<p>Many people are surprised to learn that oral health issues can be an indicator of an individual\u2019s overall health and that problems in the mouth can affect other parts of the body. While we traditionally dedicate April as Oral Cancer Awareness Month,<sup>1<\/sup>\u00a0dental and medical professionals throughout the US should emphasize to their patients\u00a0<em>daily<\/em>\u00a0the importance of making oral cancer screenings part of the routine dental exam.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>More about oral cancer \u2026<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dentistryiq.com\/dentistry\/oral-cancer\/article\/14299226\/the-dental-hygienists-guide-to-oral-pathology-in-patients-with-oral-cancer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\" data-feathr-link-aids=\"5d3f06f2c0645c763104b681\">The dental hygienist\u2019s guide to pathology in patients with oral cancer<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The prevalence of oral cancer underscores the importance of regular screenings. Research from the Oral Cancer Foundation<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0indicates that oral cancer cases in the US have increased nearly 50% in the last 10 years. In the US, there were more than 54,000 cases of oral cancer diagnosed in 2021, which was roughly four times more than the number of cervical cancer cases diagnosed in the same year.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<h2>Oral issues that require medical attention<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Red, white, or dark discoloration of soft tissue in the mouth<\/li>\n<li>Ulcerations or sores that do not heal<\/li>\n<li>Any abnormality that easily bleeds when touched<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty speaking, chewing, or swallowing<\/li>\n<li>Swelling of the jaw<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty moving the jaw<\/li>\n<li>Tongue numbness<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty moving the tongue<\/li>\n<li>Ear pain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The good news: Early detection saves lives<\/h2>\n<p>Despite the alarming oral cancer statistics, the news isn\u2019t all bad.\u00a0<em>Patients diagnosed with oral cancers have a survival rate as high as 90% when the disease is found in its early stages of development.<\/em>\u00a0This is why it is crucial for dental and medical professionals to encourage patients to regularly check for signs and symptoms of oral cancer and to contact their dentist or primary care physician if an oral abnormality persists for two weeks or longer.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>More about oral cancer \u2026\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dentistryiq.com\/dental-hygiene\/article\/14176803\/are-dental-hygienists-asking-patients-the-right-questions-to-prevent-oral-cancer\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\" data-feathr-link-aids=\"5d3f06f2c0645c763104b681\">Oral cancer: Are you asking the right questions?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For Amber Young, chief brand officer at Oral Cancer Cause,<sup>4<\/sup>\u00a0the day she elected to have an oral cancer screening on the advice of her dentist was a moment that changed her life. The results of the screening detected what was later determined to be stage 4 cancer that, if left undetected, would have been fatal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t be here if my dentist and her team didn\u2019t care so much about their patients,\u201d Young said. \u201cI\u2019m so thankful for my dentist\u2014I love my dentist, she saved my life, and I advocate for her and her team.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>A leading culprit: Human papillomavirus<\/h2>\n<p>One of the leading causes of oral cancer is the human papillomavirus (HPV). More than 70% of oral cancers are associated with HPV-16 and HPV-18 subtypes.<sup>5<\/sup>\u00a0In the oral cavity, these HPV subtypes manifest primarily in the back of the throat, the base of the tongue, the tonsils, or the soft palate. There are approximately 130 versions of HPV, and HPV-16 is currently the leading cause of oral cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Due to potential transmission of the virus to the oral cavity, it is highly recommended that individuals who have tested positive for HPV have regular screenings for oral cancer. Other key factors that can increase the risk of oral cancer include tobacco use of any kind, heavy\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.perioimplantadvisory.com\/periodontics\/oral-pathology\/article\/14282310\/alcohol-and-oral-cancer-quantities-and-effects\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\" data-feathr-link-aids=\"5d3f06f2c0645c763104b681\">alcohol consumption<\/a>, excessive sun exposure to the lips, and a weakened immune system. Additionally, individuals who are overweight and those ages 40 and older are at a higher risk of oral cancer.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>More about oral cancer and alcohol \u2026<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.perioimplantadvisory.com\/clinical-tips\/article\/14292072\/increase-in-oral-dysplasia-and-oral-cancer-rates-due-to-covid19-alcoholrelated-consumption\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\" data-feathr-link-aids=\"5d3f06f2c0645c763104b681\">Increase in oral dysplasia and oral cancer rates due to COVID-19 alcohol-related consumption<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that other illnesses, such as diabetes, HIV, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer\u2019s disease, can cause oral conditions that include tooth decay and periodontal disease.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Screening for oral cancer in the dental practice<\/h2>\n<p>Dental professionals who are trained in the latest screening technologies can perform noninvasive tests to detect abnormalities in the mouth. Among the technologies used to detect oral cancer is a handheld scope that uses blue light to illuminate the natural fluorescence of oral tissue. This technology enables clinicians to identify abnormalities that may not have been apparent or even visible to the naked eye.<\/p>\n<p>To increase early detection and treatment, private dental practices and dental service organizations (DSOs) that train their staff on available and emerging technologies to diagnose oral cancer will play a critical role in improving patient outcomes.<\/p>\n<h2>It takes\u00a0<em>everyone<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>The fight to raise awareness of oral cancer, increase early detection, and reduce mortality rates will require the efforts of everyone in the equation\u2014dental professionals, medical professionals, and patients.
