Capacity tightened sharply at month-end, but rates still eased. Diesel backed off its August 24 peak, yet remained expensive, especially on the West Coast.

The complete August picture

Rates: Dry van finished the final reported week at $2.19 per mile and flatbed at $2.67, excluding fuel. Both remained about 32% above the same week in 2025.

Capacity: Dry-van load posts rose 12.3% while truck posts fell 10.0% in the week ending August 28. Flatbed loads rose 8.8% while truck posts fell 8.8%.

Diesel: The national average ended August at $5.599 per gallon, 25.1 cents above August 3 but 5.3 cents below the August 24 peak.

Compliance: FMCSA’s English-language proficiency enforcement action remained a proposal as of August 31.

What this meant for an owner-operator

August created more leverage in some lanes because fewer trucks were available. It also showed why leverage is not the same as profit. A rate could be higher than last year and still miss the target after fuel, deadhead, detention, maintenance, and a weak reload were counted.

Fuel direction also varied by region. The national number eased in the final week, but California climbed to $7.218 per gallon. Route planning and fuel-card discounts mattered more on high-cost lanes.

Five checks before the next load

Update cost per mile. Use current fuel, insurance, maintenance, equipment, and overhead costs.

Price every mile. Include pickup deadhead and likely repositioning after delivery.

Separate linehaul and fuel. Compare rate information on the same basis.

Check the destination. A strong outbound rate can be weakened by a poor reload.

Keep the business ready. Maintain current authority, insurance, safety, driver, and equipment records.

August rewarded prepared carriers. The best load was the one that left enough money after every mile, cost, delay, and operating risk was counted.

How Capital Depot can help

Capital Depot helps approved carriers turn eligible invoices into more predictable working cash. Factoring cannot make a poor load profitable, but it can help cover the time between delivering freight and receiving customer payment.

Archive notice

This summary reflects market, fuel, and regulatory information available through August 31, 2026.
