SMS data was refreshed in August
FMCSA updated the Safety Measurement System on August 10, 2026, using data current through July 31. The next update was scheduled for the week of September 7.
Other August developments
- FMCSA removed five electronic logging devices from its registered-device list on August 6.
- USDOT announced proposed action involving English-language proficiency enforcement on August 7.
- FMCSA reported progress on two hours-of-service pilot programs on August 27.
What a small carrier could check
- Review company information, power-unit count, mileage, and contact details.
- Confirm the MCS-150 biennial update is not overdue.
- Review inspection, crash, and violation information.
- Check every ELD against the current registered and revoked-device lists.
- Keep driver, maintenance, hours-of-service, and drug-and-alcohol records organized.
Where to check your information
- SAFER Company Snapshot: Check identification, operating status, inspections, crashes, and safety-rating information available to the public.
- Safety Measurement System: Review the monthly safety data FMCSA uses to prioritize carriers for intervention.
- DataQs: Request review of eligible inspection, crash, registration, or safety data when supporting records show it may be incomplete or incorrect.
- Registered ELD list: Confirm that every device being used is currently registered and has not moved to the revoked list.
A practical monthly review
- Compare the company name, address, phone, power units, mileage, and operation type with your records.
- Review new inspections and violations with the driver and maintenance records.
- Save the documents supporting any correction request.
- Assign each corrective action to a person and due date.
- Check FMCSA announcements for final rules, proposals, pilots, and device notices.
DataQs is not a way to remove a correct violation simply because it hurts a score. A request should explain the specific problem and include records that support the requested review.
