This directory records the sources Capital Depot reviewed in August 2026. Websites and programs can change, so later readers should confirm that each source is still current.

Safety and authority

  • FMCSA: Regulations, registration, ELD notices, safety guidance, and agency announcements.
  • SAFER and SMS: Authority, inspection, crash, and safety information.
  • DataQs: The official process for requesting review of eligible federal and state data.

Fuel and operating costs

  • U.S. Energy Information Administration: Weekly national and regional diesel prices.
  • ATRI: Research on trucking operating costs and industry issues.

Freight and business conditions

  • DAT Freight & Analytics: Load-board and market reporting.
  • Transport Topics and Commercial Carrier Journal: Industry reporting and business context.

Owner-operator organizations

  • OOIDA: Advocacy, education, and member resources for owner-operators.
  • AITA, NAIT, and trucking associations: Different combinations of education, advocacy, services, and industry information.
Use industry reporting to understand an issue, then confirm important compliance, fuel, safety, or financial decisions at the original source.

Before accepting a load

  • SAFER: Verify a carrier or business identity and review public operating information.
  • DAT: Review available freight, lane activity, and rate context. A load-board number is a starting point, not proof that a load will be profitable.
  • Broker-credit information: Review payment history, authority, and any internal approval requirements before dispatch.

Once a week

  • EIA diesel update: Compare the national figure with the regions where the truck will operate.
  • Receivables: Review invoices not submitted, disputed, approved, due, and past due.
  • Load and lane history: Compare actual all-mile revenue, deadhead, detention, and reload results with the original plan.

Once a month

  • FMCSA SMS: Review new inspection and safety information after the monthly update.
  • DataQs: Use supporting documents to request review when eligible data appears incomplete or incorrect.
  • ATRI: Use research as a benchmark, then compare it with your own operating records.
  • OOIDA: Review owner-operator advocacy, education, and member information.

When a rule or notice changes

Start with the original agency document. A proposal is not a final rule, and an announcement may not contain every effective date or exception. Use FMCSA announcements to find the issue, then open the linked rule, guidance, or official notice before changing company procedures.

A simple information routine

  1. Weekly: Fuel, unpaid invoices, load availability, and lane results.
  2. Monthly: SMS, inspections, company information, maintenance cost, and cost per mile.
  3. Quarterly: Insurance, permits, customer concentration, equipment condition, and cash reserves.
  4. As needed: DataQs requests, revoked ELD checks, weather restrictions, and new government notices.
